This small brown bird varies greatly in colour across Australia. Its back can be anything from sandy to reddish grey to rich rufous red to blackish. This colour variation often coincides with the colour of the regional soil. Rufous populations often occur on red soils, dark ones on black soils, and greyer plumaged ones on grey soils. Scientists suspect this may be an adaptation to aid camouflage in these ground-dwelling birds.
