A landmark study by CSIRO scientists in the 1960s demonstrated that magpies live in a well-defined hierarchical society. Each territory is maintained by an elite group, usually one male and two females, one of which mates with the male. Unattached birds of lower rank form large mobile flocks and most never even attempt to nest.
