Easily confused with the Brolga, the Sarus Crane is distinguished by a patch of bare red facial skin that extends down to form a distinct collar on its neck. Sarus Cranes were thought to live only in India and Southeast Asia until they were discovered in northeast Queensland in the 1960s. Further research has shown that Australia's Sarus Cranes are morphologically distinctive, suggesting that they may actually have been in Australia long before they were noticed.
